1990s

The Nifty Nineties

The Political Scene

In 1991, when we fought the Persian Gulf War, George Bush was president.  He
was really really popular during the war.

  But then.....

In 1992, Bill Clinton was elected over George Bush and Ross Perot. George Bush was upset, but it was no help in getting his job back.
Janet Reno was appointed to be Attorney General by Clinton.
Angus King was elected governor of Maine.  It was unusual because he is an independent.
In 1996, Bill Clinton was reelected over Ross Perot and Bob Dole.

For the Kids

Tickle Me Elmo made millions of dollars.  People were paying hundreds for it just because Rosie O'Donnell talked about it on her show.  It was the top seller of 1996!
Beanie Babies were the top sellers of '97.  People paid hundreds for certain ones.  They were rushing to the stores for them--especially the retired ones.
The first Beanie Baby was made by two kids, in the early nineties. The rest, the mom helped with.
The Nano company came out with Nano pets, and the Tamagotchi company came out with virtual pets.
Nintendo came out with Super Nintendo, Gameboy, and Nintendo 64.  Sega came out with Gamecom and Sega Saturn.

Something for Everyone

People rushed to the movie theaters in 1997 and 1998 to see Titanic.  It tied an Academy record by winning eleven Academy awards.  It won Best Picture.  It also broke the world record for making the most money in theaters.  Moviegoers
were terrified by Scream (be careful, this is kind of gross) and I Know What You Did Last Summer, and they slammed with Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny in Space Jam. Earlier in the nineties, Jurassic Park, followed by The Lost World,  captured our imagination.
Hanson and Spice Girls were popular in the late nineties.  TLC, Boys II Men, Hoolio, and Mariah Carey were also popular singers in the nineties.

In The News

Those Denver Broncos are so good--they beat Green Bay in Super Bowl XXXII. Green Bay had beaten the New England Patriots the year before.  John Elway finally won his first Super Bowl.  Bill Clinton won in 1996 for president for the second time in a row.  Oprah Winfrey went to court for speaking out against Mad Cow disease, but she won.  The Oklahoma City bombing killed so many children and adults.  Timothy McVeigh was sentenced to die for the bombing, and Terry Nichols got life in prison.   The OJ Simpson trial went on for a long time.  He was found innocent of killing his wife and another man.
Princess Diana and Mother Teresa both died in 1997 and the world was very sad.
The ice storm in Maine in 1998, was really bad.  Trees fell and people lost their power for up to two weeks.  No one seemed to escape the wrath of El Nino--with flooding in California, and killer tornadoes in the south.

Something New

The nineties inventions are Tamagotchis which is the most popular toy besides the Tickle Me Elmo.  Also invented in the nineties was a tornado warning alert system.  We bet that everyone is glad that the tornado warning system was invented, especially the people on the tornado belt.  Also invented was a cd rom disc that can carry a full-length feature film, complete with audio and visual.

What They Wore

The styles of the seventies are coming back to the '90's!  Platform shoes and bell-bottom things that our parents wore in the seventies are now in style again.  If you want to see what is coming back from the '70's, here it is now.
Buckle up!  And get in the groove.  Here we go:  tight shirts and hip huggers and tight bell bottoms with platform shoes at the discos.  I think we've seen enough.  Back to the '90's:  Wow!  Belly shirts, high hells, cut shorts, Air Jordans, Nikes, black lipstick--purple, orange, and green, too.  High ponytails, hair dyed all different colors, different color nail polish--there sure are a lot of styles.  Not to forget baggy pants!!!
