1980s

The Eighties

What They Played With
The toys in the eighties that were popular were Big Wheels, Cabbage Patch Kids, and Pacman video games.  Some of the toys that were not so successful were My Little Pony, Care Bears, and California raisins.  These toys still sold a lot, but not as many as the popular ones.  There were some toys that were not huge sellers, like the Snoopy Snow Cone Machine, Easy Bake Ovens, and modified cars. These toys were benchmarks for newer and better toys to come in the nineties.

In the News

Ronald Reagan was president

The Challenger exploded as a horrified nation watched, in 1986.  Mount Saint Helens blew up, killing many people.  A search team was sent down to look for the Titanic and they were successful  72 years after it had sunk.  Miss Liberty was restored after celebrating her 100th birthday.  Charles and Diana got married and that was huge, and Diana had her first baby a year later.
Terrorists bombed Paris, killing four.  The film actress Natalie Wood drowned.  Jean Harris was found guilty of murdering a famous doctor in a very well publicized trial.

Fashionable Attire

New vocalist, Madonna, sets a new undergarment style.  A new style of parachute pants put a new name to style.  From the sixties to the eighties, hair remains very expressive for whatever mood you are in.
Mini skirts made a comeback.  Plastic skirts and high high heels were popular, even for young girls.

What Was New?

The computer and mouse moved in to stay.

Entertainment in the 80's

On TV, the Simpsons made their first appearance on the air in 1987.

In the early 80's Madonna made her first appearance as an up and coming singer.  Some of the other artists of the time were Prince, Tears for Fears, Duran Duran, and Culture Club.  You were able to listen to them on the go with the new invention of the Sony Walkman.  Some of the movies that were in the theaters were the Friday the 13th series, ET, and Big.   Some of the other popular shows were the Price is Right game show, Three's Company, CHIPS, and Facts of Life.  All of these media helped shape what the future would bring in the nineties.
