| 1897: This sectional view of Portland's principal street is from below Monument Square and consequently below the most lively and most modern part of the thoroughfare. This is rather an older part of the city although in the view appears the City Hall which is in fact very near the geographical center of town; still, westward, ho! has always been the direction of Portland's growth, and what were the principal avenues of trade a decade ago are fast losing pace with the westward progress. |
