| 1897: Portland has ever led the state in recognizing the national guard, and this building, which the city erected for their use, and opened on February 5, 1897, is a great credit to Maine. It cost fully $50,000 exclusive of the site, and is the second in size in all New England. Indeed it may, with the possible exception of the South Armory, Boston, be accounted the largest and best-appointed battalion armory in the country. |
