1897: Portland's Memorial to her most illustrious son, done in bronze, at Rome, by Franklin Simmons, a Maine sculptor, stands upon a massive pedestal of New Hampshire granite, in Longfellow Square, which is formed by the intersection of four of the city's most beautiful streets in the semi-residential part. Busy Congress Street, the main artery of the city with its numerous electric cars passes through this square and visitors en route from the Union Station cannot fail to be impressed with the fact that Portland is proud if its distinction as the birthplace and early home of the greatest American poet. 1897 in and about Portland
